RETELLING OF FAIRY TALES

The Golden Braid (Thomas Nelson, November 2015)
The one who needs rescuing isn’t always the one in the tower…
Rapunzel can throw a knife better than any man. She paints beautiful flowering vines on the walls of her plaster houses. She sings so sweetly she can coax even a beast to sleep. But there are two things she is afraid her mother might never allow her to do: learn to read and marry.
Fiercely devoted to Rapunzel, her mother is suspicious of every man who so much as looks at her daughter and warns her that no man can be trusted. After a young village farmer asks for Rapunzel’s hand in marriage, Mother decides to move them once again—this time, to the large city of Hagenheim.
The journey proves treacherous, and after being rescued by a knight—Sir Gerek—Rapunzel, in turn, rescues him farther down the road. As a result, Sir Gerek agrees to repay his debt to Rapunzel by teaching her to read. Could there be more to him than his arrogance and desire to marry for riches and position?
As Rapunzel acclimates to life in a new city, she uncovers a mystery that will forever change her life. In this Rapunzel story unlike any other, a world of secrets and treachery are about to be revealed after seventeen years. How will Rapunzel finally take control of her own destiny? And who will prove faithful to a lowly peasant girl with no one to turn to?

Melanie Dickerson is the author of "The Healer’s Apprentice," a Christy Award finalist and winner of the National Reader’s Choice Award for Best First Book. Melanie earned a bachelor’s degree in special education from the University of Alabama and has been a teacher and a missionary. She lives with her husband and two daughters in Huntsville, Alabama.

MY REVIEW OF THIS READ:  This is my first and will not be my last read from Melanie.   Who ever thought that you could re-tell a fairy tale?  Melanie has done it in the re-telling of Rapunzel.

Rapunzel has moved from village to village.  Anytime she thinks her mother is settling them down and she begins to make friends or a guy gets close enough to ask for her hand in marriage, her mother packs all of their belongings and moves them to a new village.

This time they move to a city instead of a village.   The road is treacherous and they end up being rescued by Sir Gerek the knight.   His kindness makes an impression on Rapunzel, but her mother wants no part of him and puts off his kindness.

Will Rapunzel discover the secrets from long ago that her mother kept hidden from her?   Will Sir Gerek be the one true friend she can turn to in need and help her?   Come join Melanie on this re-telling of Rapunzel.

ANOTHER WAY HOME BY DEBORAH RANEY | BLOG TOUR AND BOOK GIVEAWAY

{MORE ABOUT ANOTHER WAY HOME}

Another Way Home (Abingdon Press, October 2015)
Sometimes God’s ways are not at all what we expect . . . and exactly what we need.
Grant and Audrey are adding grandchildren to their family left and right, but middle daughter, Danae, and her husband, Dallas Brooks, have been trying for years with no baby in sight.
Though Danae is ready to consider adoption, Dallas will not even discuss it. Despairing of ever having a family of her own, Danae decides to pour her passion and energies into volunteer work with a newly opened women’s shelter in town. Looking for a good cause to fill her lonely days, she never expects to give her heart to the hurting women she meets there. She’s finally learning to live her life with gratitude, but then heart-wrenching events on Thanksgiving weekend threaten to pull the entire Whitman clan into turmoil—and leave them all forever changed.

{MORE ABOUT DEBORAH RANEY}

Deborah Raney’s books have won numerous awards, including the RITA, National Readers Choice Award, HOLT Medallion, and the Carol Award, and have twice been Christy Award finalists. She and her husband, Ken, recently traded small-town life in Kansas—the setting of many of Deborah’s novels—for life in the (relatively) big city of Wichita, where they enjoy gardening, antiquing, movies, and traveling to visit four children and a growing brood of grandchildren who all live much too far away.
Find out more about Deborah at http://deborahraney.com.

Have your plans ever gone awry, only for you to realize what happened was God’s plan—and much better than what you had planned for yourself? You’ll want to read Deborah Raney’s Another Way Home, the third Chicory Inn novel. Danae and her husband, Dallas Brooks, have been trying for years with no baby in sight. Danae is finally learning to live her life with gratitude, but then heart-wrenching events on Thanksgiving weekend threaten to pull the entire Whitman clan into turmoil—and leave them all forever changed.
Enter to win a copy of Another Way Home—five winners will be chosen! Click the image below to enter to win. The winners will be announced November 23 on the Litfuse blog!

MY REVIEW OF THIS READ:  This is the third book in the Chicory Inn Series.   Come join Dallas and Danae Brooks as they tread the waters of infertility and face the question of adoption.

Danae begins a journey of trying to find purpose in her life when she volunteers through her church at a shelter for battered women through her church.  The women that she comes to know through the shelter starts giving her purpose.

Will Dallas still be stubborn or will he bend to the idea of adoption?   What will happen to him and Danae?

My feelings about Danae .... yes, she seems a little distant and at times even short with her sisters who do not seem to have any problems conceiving.  How would you respond when everyone around you seems to have no problems having children?   How do you tread the waters of infertility, adoption and even foster parenting?

Join Danae and Dallas as they find their way in the book Another Way Home.

***This book deals with foster parenting, adoption and includes Domestic Violence too***

The Finishing School by Valerie Woerner

About the book:
The Finishing School: How One Book Nerd Began Living What She Learned
 (Nyree Press, August 2015)

Are you tired of waiting for change to happen in your life? Do you feel stuck, even though you want to live more intentionally?

In today's world, our most precious pursuit of a life well lived gets squeezed out by the silliest of things: binging on Netflix or ice cream, shopping trips for things we don't need, bad habits we can't seem to get a handle on, and so much more. Valerie has been there despite knowing what she wanted for her life. Actually do it? That's the challenge.

After gobbling up all the non-fiction and self-help books her donut-filled belly could handle, she decided it was time to put her knowledge to good use and start actually living it out. You will hear about her journey through victories and plenty of failures and find practical tips to apply to your own pursuit of holiness. You will find homework at the end of each chapter that includes a worksheet to put real change in motion for your own life as well as recommended books to further study those topics that really test you.

Purchase a copy:

Valerie Woerner is owner of Val Marie Paper. She and her husband, Tyler, live in Louisiana with their daughter, Vivi Mae. The Finishing School is her first book.

MY REVIEW OF THIS BOOK:  This was a surprise gem that I signed up to review.   It is totally opposite of what I actually thought that it would be for me.

It is and is not a self-help book.   It helps you focus on what is really important in life and to make those changes that you have always wanted to make.   I really enjoyed the worksheets included with each section.   They made you focus inward and help take baby steps in making the changes you wanted always to make in your prayer life, devotional life and other areas.

The Finishing School is a great Bible Study for all ladies who want to make changes in their lives.

WHERE CHRIST IS PRESENT

Five hundred years ago, the church of Jesus Christ underwent a Reformation.

A lot happened after Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the castle church door in Wittenberg. But the fallout was not simply the start of Protestantism. The Roman Catholic Church also recast itself in response to Luther’s call for reforms. And contrary to common belief, Martin Luther did not set out to start a new church. Rather, he was trying to reform the church that already existed by reemphasizing its essence—namely, the “good news” (the gospel) that Jesus forgives and saves sinners.

The unity of the church was broken when the pope rejected this call for reform and excommunicated Luther, starting a chain of events that did lead to the institutional fracturing of Christendom and to a plethora of alternative Christian theologies. But, as many – including conservative Catholics – now admit, the church did in fact need reforming. Today, the church – including its Protestant branches – also needs reforming. Some of the issues in contemporary Christianity are very similar to those in the late Middle Ages, though others are new. But if Luther’s theology can be blamed – however unfairly – for fragmenting Christianity, perhaps today it can help us recover the wholeness of Christianity.

In the hope of that wholeness, Dr. Montgomery and Dr. Veith commissioned these essays celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, gathering some of the best contemporary voices the Lutheran church has to offer.

And we need these voices! The religious climate in the early 21st-century is simultaneously highly religious and highly secularized. It is a time of extraordinary spiritual and theological diversity. This book will propose the kind of Christianity that is best suited for our day. The remedies offered here are available by way of the same theology that was the catalyst for reforming the church five hundred years ago.

John Warwick Montgomery is the author of more than sixty books in six languages. He holds eleven earned degrees, including a Master of Philosophy in Law from the University of Essex, England, a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, a Doctorate of the University in Protestant Theology from the University of Strasbourg, France, and the higher doctorate in law (LL.D.) from the University of Cardiff, Wales. He is a Lutheran clergyman, an English barrister, and is admitted to practice as a lawyer before the Supreme Court of the United States and is a practicing avocat, Barreau de Paris, France. Dr. Montgomery currently serves as Distinguished Research Professor of Philosophy at Concordia University Wisconsin.

Gene Edward Veith is the Provost and Professor of Literature at Patrick Henry College, the Director of the Cranach Institute at Concordia Theological Seminary, a columnist for World Magazine and TableTalk, and the author of 18 books on different facets of Christianity & Culture.

MY REVIEW OF THIS BOOK:  So for the readers of my blog, I normally stick to Fiction Books (that is the genre that I am a fan) and do not read a whole lot of non-Fiction books.  I was sent an email from Goodreads and was asked to review this book.

Since, I am on a new adventure with my blogging, reviewing of books and limiting my reviews for this month.   I decided to accept the offer to review this book.

It is a great book for reference and for Bible Scholars.   It is a collection of essays exploring Lutheran theology. It goes into different religions and faith.   This is an excellent addition to any theologians library.

‘A Heart’s Home’ Conversations with Colleen Giveaway

A Heart’s Home (Thomas Nelson, August 2015)
Emmie’s hope for a life with Isaac is overshadowed by a tragic loss at Fort Phil Kearny.
Isaac Liddle is keen to marry Emmie, and she knows she shouldn’t hide her pregnancy from him any longer. But before she can tell him her secret, a widower friend asks the impossible of Emmie: Will she honor her promise to his dead wife by marrying him to care for the orphaned baby?
With the Sioux Wars threatening outside the fort, Emmie’s solemn vow threatens her happiness from within. Will she honor a promise sure to break her heart—and Isaac’s? Or is there another way to find a home for her heart?

USA Today bestselling author Colleen Coble has written several romantic suspense novels including "Tidewater Inn," "Rosemary Cottage," and the Mercy Falls, Lonestar, and Rock Harbor series.

MY REVIEW OF THIS BOOK: This is the sixth book and final book in the Journey of the Heart series.  I can truthfully say that I have went from not a fan of a min-series to a fan of a mini-series.   If you love to read, but do not have much time for reading then this is for you.   I love how Colleen has taken each book and even though they are stories in their own right the characters flow and the stories flow together.

This was the story of Emmie after finding out her deceased husband had betrayed her and she is expecting her first child.  Join Colleen Coble as she takes you on the conclusion of Journey of the Heart.  Will Emmie be forced to give up the man that she loves to keep a death bed promise to her best friend?   What will happen to Emmie and Isaac?   Colleen keeps you on the edge of your seat in the finale.

A hidden pregnancy, a promise sure to break hearts, and a tragic loss at Fort Phil Kearny: Don't miss the gripping conclusion in book six, A Heart's Home, of Colleen Coble's A Journey of the Heart series. With the Sioux Wars threatening outside the fort, Emmie’s solemn vow threatens her happiness from within. TWO YEAR BLOG ANNIVERSARY AND A NEW DIRECTION

WOW!  It is hard to believe that two years has passed since I began this journey.   All I can say it has been an incredible journey for me.

It has been a journey of discovery and challenges for me.  I have discovered "new" and "new to me" authors.  I have discovered Historical Fiction as a "new to me" genre only to find that the one genre that I ignored has increasingly became my favorite.  This journey has challenged me and stretched me beyond all that I could ever imagine.

My blogging took on a whole new dimension for me this summer when I was chosen as an INSPYs Award Judge in the General Fiction category.  It was a pleasure serving and it was exciting to see how many different opinions we had and enjoyed the discussion to arrive at an unanimous decision.  It was a challenge and I throughly enjoyed it and have enjoyed my reading journey.

I have enjoyed reading, reviewing and blogging for all the books that I have done.  The one thing I have noticed is that my TBR (To Be Read) pile is not getting any smaller and so I will be doing limited blog tours and posting giveaways and promoting books, but I am wanting to devote more time to "me" reading and writing reviews on what I am reading.   I am also in a Ladies Book Club that meets once a month and when I can't read the books that we are reading due to deadlines and having to review a book I feel like I am missing out on things.

God Bless,

Tia Johnson

Karen Barnett’s ‘Beyond the Ashes’ 5-Book Giveaway

Beyond the Ashes (Abingdon Press, June 2015)
Where better to rebuild and face one’s fears than in 1906 San Francisco, a city rising from the ashes?
Ruby Marshall, a young widow, is certain she’ll discover new purpose assisting her brother Robert with his cancer research, but she doesn’t anticipate finding new love.
Dr. Gerald Larkspur dreams of filling his empty home with family, but he’d always hoped it would be a wife and children. In the aftermath of the great earthquake, the rooms are overflowing with extended family and friends left homeless by the disaster. When Robert’s widowed sister arrives, the close quarters seem close indeed.
Ruby and Gerald’s fledgling romance is put at risk when Gerald develops symptoms of the very disease they’re striving to cure. Together they must ask—is it worth a second chance at love when time might be short?

Karen Barnett is the author of "Beyond the Ashes," "Out of the Ruins," and "Mistaken." Named the 2013 Writer of Promise by Oregon Christian Writers, Karen lives in Albany, Oregon, with her husband and two kids. When she’s not writing novels, she loves speaking at women’s events, libraries, and book clubs.

MY VIEW:  I really enjoyed the debut novel from Karen Barnett.  So, when the sequel came out I knew that it was something that I had to read.

I love the research that has gone into this novel.   It is not another boy meets girl and fall in love novel, but it is a novel of rebuilding and starting over.  Ruby King Marshall comes to San Francisco to help with the relief work and to help her brother find a wife.   She is surprised at the destruction of San Francisco and the rebuilding that has already started.  There is another surprise that awaits her.

How do you start over after losing a loved one?   Can one find love again?   Time is short, but are you willing to risk all of that for love and happiness along the way.

Come follow the story of Ruby King Marshall and Dr. Gerald Larkspur as they find answers to those questions.   Step back in time after the great San Francisco Earthquake and medicine was in its early infancy especially the treatment of cancer.   It makes you realize how far medicine has come today.

Emmie finds shelter in the arms of a soldier, but her secret could drive them apart.

When Emmie Croftner answered the door to her late husband’s home, she discovered an awful truth: her deceased husband was a bigamist. And what’s more, the home she thought she inherited never belonged to her at all.
